Region 1
Region 1Region 1 is in the northwest corner of Oregon. It is comprises three counties: Columbia County in the Portland metro area and Clatsop and Tillamook counties along the coast. The Columbia River forms the northern boundary of the region and the Pacific Ocean lies to the west. The rivers, ocean and bays provide salmon, shrimp, oysters, crab and other fish that support the large seafood industry in Astoria and also in Garibaldi on Tillamook Bay. Most of the region's major population centers are next to the Columbia River and along the coast. The rugged interior is largely forest and farm land. Trees are used by local wood products mills and the region's two paper plants. Dairy farms and products are a mainstay of Tillamook County's economy. Over the past several decades, tourism has become increasingly important to the Clatsop County economy while more Columbia County residents commute to jobs in nearby Portland and Cowlitz, County, Wash.
