Population estimates from Portland State University's Population Research Center for Oregon counties and cities were recently released. Oregon's statewide population rose by 0.9 percent between July 1, 2008 and July 1, 2009. This rate of growth was much slower than the 1990s and earlier in the 2000s, reflecting less in-migration and the recession's toll on overall population mobility. Oregon's population was estimated at 3,823,465.

In Jackson County, population estimates show that the county added 1,705 residents between mid-2008 and mid-2009, for an increase of 0.8 percent to reach 207,010. Population totals from the county's larger incorporated cities:

  • Medford 77,246 - includes 6 annexed residents from the original estimates
  • Ashland 21,505
  • Central Point 17,165
  • Eagle Point 8,790
  • Talent 6,680
  • Phoenix 4,855
  • Shady Cove 2,865
  • Jacksonville 2,655
  • Rogue River 2,090

Josephine County's population was estimated at 83,665, an increase of 375 from the prior year, for a growth rate of 0.5 percent. Josephine's city population includes Grants Pass (33,225) and Cave Junction (1,750).

The graph shows that the 65 and older age group in Southern Oregon is a slightly higher portion of total population than Oregon, overall.
